From Olivia: My younger brother was taken into custody when I was 22 years old. He was just a teenager when he was sentenced to sixteen years for gang-related activity. I watched him become an adult through handwritten letters, recorded phone calls, an aging face through a glass, through the criminal justice system. I never understood how precious life was until his was behind bars. I joined Cure in 2018 and attended the support groups. I listened to their stories and told my own. Although he was recently released, I’m realizing now that the challenges don’t end there. I’m lucky to have gotten involved with the Board and truly respect the hard and important work they do. I’m not an activist. I’ve just been deeply affected by the prison system, as so many of us are, and am trying to support those facing the same challenges.
