The Sentencing Project Lifers Re-entry Study

The Sentencing Project is seeking participants to take part in qualitative interviews for a research project we are undertaking. The purpose of this project is to better understand the reentry experiences of those leaving prison after release from a life or long-term sentence. This population has been under-examined in terms of reentry needs and risks. Some early evidence suggests that people exiting long prison terms experience unique challenges. The findings are expected to inform policies and practices that support release of persons who are released from long-term imprisonment.

The project calls for participation from individuals whose crime occurred when they were 18 years old or older, who served at least 20 years before being released, and who were released from prison in the last year or two. We anticipate interviewing approximately 40 people. Interviews will last up to two hours. Participants will be compensated $100 upon completion of the interview. We anticipate conducting interviews during the summer and fall of 2024. Ideally, interviews will take place in person, but video conference calls (e.g., Zoom) may be used if necessary.

Those who are interested in being interviewed as part of this project should plan to share their experiences about leaving prison and returning home to the community. Their identity will be carefully protected and actual names will not be disclosed.

Participants must meet each of the requirements of this research, including:

  • Being 18 or older at the time of the offense for which they served 20 years or more;
  • Were sentenced to life with parole, life without parole, or a term-of-year sentence where they served 20 years or more; and
  • Were released anytime in 2022, 2023, or 2024.
